Eco School

Intent
Eco-Schools is an environmental education programme managed in England by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, the anti-litter campaign for England. Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a simple framework to help make sustainability an integral part of school life. The Eco-Schools framework is based on nine key areas: energy, water, biodiversity, school grounds, healthy living, transport, litter, waste and global citizenship.
Schools work through the Eco-Schools framework to achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, which is the highest level of recognition for environmental action and sustainability in schools.
At Woodside Academy, we aim to develop environmentally responsible pupils who understand the importance of protecting the planet. Through curriculum learning and enrichment opportunities, pupils build awareness of sustainability, biodiversity, conservation and responsible use of resources. We encourage pupils to recognise the impact of their actions on the environment and understand how they can contribute positively to their local and global communities.

Climate Pledge

As members of our school community, we recognise our responsibility to protect and care for the planet.

We pledge to:

  • Respect and value the natural world, understanding that every action we take can help or harm it.
  • Reduce waste by reusing materials, recycling properly, and avoiding single-use plastics.
  • Use energy and water wisely, switching off lights, taps, and devices when they are not needed.
  • Travel responsibly, walking, cycling, or using public transport wherever possible.
  • Care for wildlife and green spaces, both in our school and beyond.
  • Continue learning about climate change and how we can help.
  • Encourage others to join us in making positive choices for the environment.

We make this pledge as a school that believes in a sustainable, healthy future – for ourselves, for others, and for the generations to come.
