Year 1 Phonics Skills Overview
You can support your child at home by helping your child read the following High Frequency Words:
Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check is a short assessment completed by children in Year 1 to help measure their progress in phonics and early reading skills. During the check, children are asked to read a mixture of real and nonsense (“alien”) words to show how well they can use their phonics knowledge to decode unfamiliar words. The check is carried out in a relaxed, supportive environment and is designed to celebrate the progress children have made in learning to read.
To support your child at home, try to read together every day, practise recognising and blending sounds, and encourage your child to sound out unfamiliar words rather than guessing. Playing simple word games, spotting sounds in books, and using flashcards can also help build confidence and fluency. Most importantly, keep reading fun and positive to help develop a lifelong love of books.
