Today (22nd June) is Windrush Day when, in 1948 HMT Empire Windrush docked in Tilbury bringing some of the first immigrants from Britain's then colonies in the West Indies. Our Steel Band "Woodside Steel" usually attends the celebrations marking the day at Tilbury Cruise Terminal, as Steel Pan playing itself was brought to Britain by immigrants from Trinidad. The usual celebrations have been curtailed by Covid19 which has also prevented Woodside Steel from operating this year as an afterschool club for children from different classes. Instead we invited children from 3N, one of the year 3 classes who all learn Steel Pan every Wednesday as part of our Wider Opportunities scheme, to come in their "bubble" to a club after school. Next year we hope to re-open the band to all junior classes and again attend the festivities in Tilbury, but for this year, this is Woodside's contribution to Windrush Day. Well done to 3N's Woodside Steel and thank you Mr Sayer their tutor.
