Classes at Woodside are mixed ability and we no longer set for phonics or mathematics. Within each class our intention is to teach the children together as much as possible rather than have ability groups. This is because recent research from the Education Endowment Foundation has shown that children learn better in mixed ability groups. We run targeted intervention groups for those children who need extra support and small groups and one-to-one support for children who need a personalized curriculum. In the Early Years most of children's learning through activities many of which will be child-led to meet individual needs.
